Welcome to Gartelmann Wines and Magpie Café

Gartelmann Wines is a boutique winery set in the heart of the beautiful Lovedale area in Australia’s Hunter Valley. Founded in 1996 by Jorg and Jan Gartelmann, we specialize in hand crafted wines sourced from the best sites in regional New South Wales.

There’s much more to Gartelmann Wines than the classic Hunter varieties of Semillon and Shiraz – although they are justifiably proud of their award-winning examples of both. Try the aromatic Verdelho, complex Chardonnay, soft Merlot and elegant Cabernet, before moving on to the toffee-citrus sweetness of our dessert Ambrosia or the toasty spice of the Liqueur Muscat.

Come and enjoy a wine tasting in the cool of the Cellar Door or on the sun-dappled deck, or relax at the Magpie Café by the lily-covered pond with a bottle of fine Gartelmann wine.

The Magpie Café is open between 9am and 4pm for coffee and light lunches, including fresh salads, cheese and antipasto plates, pies, and quiches.

Gartelmann Wines is a true family owned and operated winery – Jan and Jorg can often be found in the Cellar Door welcoming guests and answering questions. We look forward to meeting you!

A nose of green lime and orange peel, slightly salty with flint backgrounds. The palate is fresh and tight with grapefruit pith characters and steely complexity. The finish is clean, yet long and refreshing.

2011 Jessica Verdelho

The nose shows lifted perfumed aromas of musk and spice with hints of passionfruit. The palate is clean and fresh with an abundance of fruit salad characters, particularly guava, nectarines and fresh pineapple. The finish is soft and lingering.

2010 Wilhelm Shiraz

A true Hunter Burgundy style of Shiraz. The nose shows soft cherry and strawberry fruits with savoury violet-like hints evident. The palate is fruit driven showing wild berries with a soft, spicy and gamey complexity. The finish is soft, dry, elegant and long.

February 1 - Rain, rain everywhere, but we have picked all our whites so we don't care. Seriously, we need it to slow down for the sake of the reds. We will keep you posted. Click here for more information.

January 20 - Both Gartelmann Wines and The Magpie Café will be closed on January 26th for Australia Day. We will be open as normal again on January 27th.

January 3 - The Magpie Café has reopened, expanded under cover seating, and new menu. Why not stop in for lunch next time you are in the Hunter?

December 6 - The Magpie Café is now closed for the rest of the year whilst it undergoes renovations in honour of it's first birthday. Due to reopen on January 3rd under new management, we are sure you will want to visit and check it out in the New Year.

November 23 - 2003 Gartelmann Reserve Semillon has been awarded a gold medal AND TOP 5 Wines Certificate by Winestate, Wine of Year, Australia & New Zealand. Only available now from the Cellar Door and reserved for future Member selections. Call in and pick up a bottle next time you are in the Hunter.

November 6 - New Magpie Café Opening Hours. The Café is coming up to it's first anniversary, and we are doing some modifications which have resulted in new opening hours. The Café will now be open Friday through Sunday only until the 4th of December when the major works will take place (a result of which it will be closed until the relaunch on January 3rd).
