Reviews & Awards:
"92 Points. Damp earth and mint on the nose. Vibrant in the mouth, it zips around hitting the pleasure points as if it were in a pinball machine. It’s short on the finish and I think still needs to come together. Giving it the benefit of the doubt, 92 points now..." The Key Report on Wine, Tony Keys, 2017
"92 Points Cracking cabernet! It's a striking garnet colour, but oh that nose! I can sit and inhale the complex aroma on this one all night. The richness of the dark fruits like boysenberry is phenomenal. There is also mushrooms, that pleasant fresh meat smell found in old school butchers, mint, bay leaf and a waft of vanilla from the oak. Berries found on the palate are just a little more tart than the aroma suggests. More like cranberry and red cherries but with heaps of depth. Licorice, tomato, eucalyptus, ginger, nutmeg are also intertwined in here. Oak has a strong support role which I like. The tannins are beautifully dry too. These two elements couple with firm acidity, turn the wine pleasantly austere. Yet overall I would still call the finish very smooth. The Gartelmann 2013 Jonathan Cab Sauv is a true Aussie cabernet. The best Gartelmann wine I have tried to date." The Winesmith, June 2017
"... potpourri scents and shines bright garnet in the glass. The front palate has juicy blackberry flavour and the middle palate introduces glacé cherry, peppermint chocolate, cloves and toasty oak. Ferric tannins hold sway at the finish. 4.5 stars..." Newcastle Herald, John Lewis, May 2017
"90 Points. From the Rylstone district; matured for 16 months in new and used French and American oak. The hue is bright, although relatively light; the light to medium-bodied palate has notes of fresh cassis, and has not been forced by harsh extraction to exhibit more than it has. Drink soonish." Wine Companion 2016
"91 Points. Cabernet from Mudgee though to be more accurate, it’s from the Rylstone area. The vineyard sits at 630 metres above sea level. The wine sees both French and American oak. Flesh, flow and flavour. This is a cabernet in a pretty good place. Mulberry, plum, blackcurrant and a dusting of herbs. Pencil/chocolate but modestly applied. It feels juicy. It tastes varietal. It has good extension through the finish. It’s not particularly intense but it has all bases pretty well covered. Cellar: 2018 to 2024+" Winefront, Campbell Mattinson, May 2017
"90 Points. Cabernet from a Mudgee vineyard sitting 630m above. Smells of sweet cherry tomatoes and tomato leaf. Dark plums are anchored to the floor as are some dark berry fruit and sweetish blackcurrants. There's a dry minerally feel before dusty tannins take the stage. Still a little tight and another year or so will certainly be of benefit. Good for a slow cooked meal now if impatient. Drink 2019 to 2025." QWine, May 2017
"90 Points. This wine was produced from grapes sourced from Rylstone near the south eastern boundary of Mudgee. The vineyard sits at 630 meters and was afforded a long, slow ripening period with grapes harvested in May. A light to medium red in the glass the nose has classic cassis and understated earth notes. The wine has plenty of depth and mouthfeel with good varietal expression but also showing richer plum and sweeter oak characters (American and French were used). There is a chocolate note that works with the drying tannins that have an impact on the finish. Optimal Drinking 2017 - 2025." Winereviewer.com.au, May 2017
"90 Points. Fudgee, Mudgee, more of the dusky, somewhat dusty line, with plum and mulberry. Pretty, ripe, pretty ripe. Carries a good cassis, semi-floral air to proceedings. You can't mistake it for anything but Cabernet, albeit with the freshness and juice. Easy going you'd say. Spot on you'd feel; classic... " The Vinsomniac, June 2017
"Great to see a 4 year old current release wine. Light bright red with purple hues. Spicy and red berry aromas and lovely flavours on the palate, which finishes quite tight, needing more time to soften off. Or alternatively enjoy this delightful wine now with food. TOP STUFF." Wine Assist, Dan Traucki, May 2017
" For me, a Gartelmann newcomer that has immediately impressed with its lean, but fully ripe, high-altitude flavours." PS News, John Rozentals, May 2017
