2016 Gartelmann 'Sarah Elizabeth' Chardonnay
Wine Notes: Barrel fermented in new and one year old 500 litre puncheons and 300 litre hogsheads to achieve the more subtle oak characters. Kept in oak for ten months with monthly lees stirring. Freshness and vitality was preserved by inhibiting malolactic fermentation.
Region: Orange Region
Tasting Notes: The caramelised peaches on the nose, the citrusy nectarines on the palate, the long lime vanillin wafts on the finish, seducing the taste buds to believe it is sweet but finishing bone dry. This is one of those wines that you will remember for a long time. Such a cliche’ but it is superbly balanced and full of flavour. Delights every sense. To all who have wandered away from Chardonnay... come back, try this, you will not be continuing on that erroneous path any longer.
Food and Wine Matching: Think chicken and mushroom pie, crispy skin salmon on mash, soft ripe cheese oozing on pumpernickel, gnocchi with pesto and aioli. Be inventive.
