2014 Gartelmann Jesse Shiraz
This wine is named after Jorg Gartelmann’s grandson.
The Mudgee region has a warm climate but the vineyard has an advantage. By being at 480m altitude, it takes the benefits of the warm ripening weather but escapes the intensive heat which can be destructive to fruit. The vineyard block is on sloping reddish brown clay-loam soil mixed with sandstone and pebbles which provides good drainage and mineral input.
Oak maturation for 18 months in new and one to three year old French and American Hogsheads and Puncheons has delivered a complex wine with notes
of cedar and vanilla, with exceptional tannin structure.
A style of red that marries well with the darker meats, such as braised beef cheeks and game.
Drink from 2017, better from 2019 or cellar to 2023.
October 2013 to February 2014 had way below average rainfalls, with Min daily temperatures below 10 year average, and max temperatures slightly above 10 year average. The first significant rain of 27 mm on 1st March was way past our harvest date, and great Shiraz was the result.
This wine has only recently been bottled.
