2011 Diedrich Shiraz
The Diedrich is our icon Shiraz, produced only in good vintages from old vines. Pressing a bit lighter for a less tannic wine.
MATURATION:The wine was kept in a mixture of new 500 litre puncheons and 300 litre hogsheads, and 1 to 3 year old puncheons and hogsheads, some American, some French for 14 months.
VINEYARD:The fruit is from 46 year old vines on black basalt soil over a limestone base with a slight slope giving good drainage and mineral input. The soil type, roots and pruning give a balanced canopy requiring no shoot or bunch thinning to produce a perfect low crop level. Top of the hill allows easy drainage when there is too much rain.
TASTING NOTES:Vibrant Plum Colour Nose of Black Cherry, mulberry and fresh spices with hints of mocca. A medium to full bodied traditional Hunter Valley Style wine showing firm velvet tannins layered over flavours of blackcurrants and plum. Well integrated oak gives the wine structure and persistence of length.
CELLARING: Drink from 2014 or cellar to 2021
VINTAGE: 2011 was a very good season in the Lower Hunter Valley, with December having below average rainfalls and below average maximum temperatures. January only had two occasions where 2 consecutive days had temperatures over 35 degrees. Because of the low cropping level, harvest was earlier than for other shiraz, and missed the rain
