2015 Gartelmann 'Diedrich' Shiraz
Region: Orange, NSW
Terroir: This vineyard just north of Orange often misses the late autumn rains and results in a very complex, savoury and intense shiraz. The vineyard block is on reddish brown clay-loam mixed with sandstone and ironstones, providing good drainage and mineral input.
Maturation: Matured for 18 months in a mixture of new and one to three year old 500 litre puncheons and 300 litre hogsheads. We used a mix of American and French oak barrels.
Tasting Notes: This soars with pretty aromas of florals, red berried fruits, a dusting of spice and equally rewarding on the palate. An elegant wine, medium-weighted with supple, sleek tannins, crisp, lemony acidity and plenty of joy inbetween. Really hard to put down.
Food Matching: A big juicy hunk of meat, or a wad of dark bread slathered with lashings of freshly-churned butter and shavings of a cheese.
Cellaring: Drink from 2018, great in 2021 or cellar until 2025+.

"95/100 This soars with pretty aromas of florals, red berried fruits, a dusting of spice and equally rewarding on the palate. An elegant wine, medium-weighted with supple, sleek tannins, crisp, lemony acidity and plenty of joy in-between. Really hard to put down." Wine Companion 2018
"94/100 It’s a lovely wine. An excellent wine. It’s earthen and characterful, balanced and dense. Every step it takes is firm and well placed. Blackberries, earth, toasty oak, sweet dry spices. Oak is pretty lavishly applied but it has meshed perfectly with the fruit. You’d imagine it will enjoy a long life." Winefront, Campbell Mattinson, Dec 2017
"94/100 One of the best Shiraz releases from Orange I've seen in recent memory. The best wine I've seen from Gartelmann too... This is tightly wound and will be ready to pounce with some bottle age under its belt. Fruit and oak are beautifully balanced. Fine Sheets of pepper caress the mouth. It's spicy and inviting calling for another sip. A dab of residual sugar lingers and the fruit delivered is intense and bold yet maintaining its medium bodied shape. Fine tannins to finish possesses a brick dust texture..." QWine, Nov 2017
"93/100 Sourced from the cool climes of orange, this wine has structure, class and longevity written all over it. It’s a concentrated wine that will unfurl over decades. A dark red in the glass, the nose benefits from it’s cool climate roots with savoury edged dark fruits and integrated French oak. The palate provides concentrated dark cherry and plum, with fine but impactful graphite and earth laced tannins. Oak has been soaked up by commanding fruit but there are glimpses that add an elegant complexity in the background and will become part of the symphony in years to come. The finish enjoys a layer of dark chocolate with driving length of plum that is accentuated by a taut acid structure; a suggestion of dried herbs lingers." Wine Reviewer, Nov 2017
"This full-bodied flagship shiraz from the Gartlemann team is a well integrated enjoyable wine. Still youthful with all the primary vibrancy, it is nontheless tightly balanced. It's all there in abundance: Rich ripe cool climate fruit, defined tannins, supportive acid and soild alcohol. These attributes are all cloaked in a mantle of palate smoothness and length.
This is a quality wine well deserving of all the accolades and trophies already garnered. It will cellar well and will continue to deliver drinking pleasure for the next 5 - 8 years." The Grape Hunter, Gilbert Labour, Nov 2017
