2017 Gartelmann 'Lisa' Reserve Chardonnay
Named after Jorg Gartelmann’s aunt Lisa
STYLE & WINEMAKING
Barrel fermented in new and one year old 500 litre puncheons and 300 litre hogsheads to achieve the more subtle oak characters. Kept in oak for ten months with monthly lees stirring. Freshness and vitality was preserved by inhibiting malolactic fermentation.
A vineyard in the Orange Region west of Orange.
This cold climate chardonnay is more subtle, less blowsy, quietly intense. Right now this Reserve chardonnay is elegant, subdued, exhibiting delightful citrus and flinty characters with a good dash of excellent French oak to add the vanilla and toasty bouquet we expect. Its full aroma though is still hiding behind a respectful alcohol content of 13%, and some bracing acid.
Enjoy now at room temperature with gentle flavours of poached chicken, scallops in cream or soft ripe cheeses. But leave it alone for a year or so and watch it bloom into something altogether less self-effacing.
A dry November, average December, slightly warmer January and extremely dry February with slightly higher temperatures provided ideal conditions..
Drink from 2018 or cellar until 2025+.
