2015 Gartelmann 'Joey' Merlot
Region: Orange, NSW
Terrior: The vineyard location is at 630m altitude, avoiding the hot temperatures in the summer resulting in a slow ripening season which adds to the complexity of the wine. The vineyard block is on reddish brown clay-loam mixed with sandstone and ironstones, providing good drainage and mineral input.
Maturation: Kept in 25% new French Oak puncheons, with the balance in 1-3 year old French puncheons and hogshead for 14 months.
Tasting Notes: The 2015 Joey is Pavarotti, classic, clean, intensely dramatic with fantastically sweet high notes but a seamless range and depth of flavour underneath the smooth surface. This wine is a class act: engaging cassis fruit overture on the nose, blended blackberries and raspberries symphonise on the palate, with only the best of oak nuances, and a softly tannic final dénouement. Sublime, and delicious.
Food Matching: A good cheese, roast duckling, pork and roasted smoky BBq’d anything.
Cellaring: Drink from 2017, great from 2020, or cellar until 2025
