2015 Gartelmann Wilhelm Shiraz
Hunter Valley

2015 Gartelmann Wilhelm Shiraz

NAME: This wine has been named after Jorg Gartelmann’s Uncle Wilhelm.

VINEYARDS: The grapes were grown at Denman in the Upper Hunter Valley

TASTING NOTES: Deep ruby garnet in colour, it has a nose rich in cherries and blackberries with the merest hint of sandalwood At 14.3% alcohol it is no shrinking violet, yet the warmth on the palate is happily balanced with ripe fruit flavours, invigorating acid and velvet smoky-wood tannins.

The finish is unmistakeably “Hunter Valley” with a compote of chariness, aniseed and dark berries. As a regular part of your weekly wine quota, you will no doubt guzzle this with pre-dinner snacks, cooking dinner titbits, actually eating dinner, and then after dinner sit-back and sip.

FOOD MATCHING: Think BBQ lamb, fried haloumi with pesto... this wine will cope with just about anything (except maybe very subtle white fish).

CELLARING: Enjoy from 2018, great drinking from 2020 or cellar to 2024.

VINTAGE: The Hunter 2015 vintage was one to reward the lucky ones. A dry November and December with average temperatures were helpful, then a very wet January with earlier February rains, easing off a week before harvest.

Pavarotti, classic, clean, intensely dramatic with fantastically sweet high notes but a seamless range and depth of flavour underneath the smooth surface. This wine is a class act: engaging cassis fruit overture on the nose, blended blackberries and raspberries symphonise on the palate, with only the best of oak nuances, and a softly  tannic final dénouement. Sublime, and delicious.

The caramelised peaches on the nose, the citrusy nectarines on the palate, the long lime vanillin wafts on the finish, seducing the taste buds to believe it is sweet but finishing bone dry. This is one of those wines that you will remember for a long time. Such a cliche’ but it is superbly balanced and full of flavour. Delights every sense. To all who have wandered away from Chardonnay... come back, try this, you will not be continuing on that erroneous path any longer

What happens at Vintage?

Its Vintage time again and wow, it’s sure been hot! But overall, we are really pleased with the Hunter Valley Harvest so far. On January 9th we picked Chardonnay for our Sparkling white base, followed by Semillon and Verdelho the week after. Despite very different seasons they were both picked at the same time as last year and are showing better acid and are a little more delicate in flavour than 2018.  Continue »
