2018 Gartelmann 'Benjamin' Semillon
Hunter Valley

2018 Gartelmann 'Benjamin' Semillon

Region: Hunter Valley, NSW

Terroir: The fruit for this wine was sourced from the Glenesk vineyard the Upper Hunter sub region, on alluvial sands. Another classic Hunter Valley Semillon from the Gartelmann stable, typical of the wonderful variety from this region

Tasting Notes: Predominantly lemon and grapefruit characters feature on the nose as blossoms, and race around the palate as zesty fruit. The acid is tight and refreshing, the palate long and invigorating with a drawstring of minerality to bring it all together. Do not fight against the temptation to have another glass, nor the strong feeling that you should put a few down to observe over the next 5 or 10 years.

Food Matching: Enjoy with a creamy fish pie, or with just about anything creamy, cheesy or olive oily that is summery flavourful.

Cellaring: Drink now or cellar until 2022 for a guaranteed smooth “honey”, or until 2026 for maximum ageing.

Reviews & Awards

"There is no sharp distracting I have to wait a while acidity, instead what you have is a seamless fruit focussed profile and finish showing off the classic lemons, limes, straw and grassy characters that typify this underrated varietal. The aromas are citrus dominated and moreish and attract you to the riper smoother features of the wine. It drinks very well with a softer well roundedness on a medium bodied dry finish. A versatile drop, standing well as a drink now Semillon or a food friendly leave for a few more years to develop that honeyness. Each way you win!" Try it with Vietnamese pancake. About $27. 11.5%. Drink to 2025." Paul Ippolito Dec 2019

"93/100  A summer time pleaser. Be my guest to indulge. Chill hard and the welcome mat is rolled out with ease. So refreshing, there's a tension coiled up in the mouth but delivery is plentiful. Aromas of lemongrass, citrus flower and lemon zest with a tangy citrus drive through the mouth. There's lashings of textural appeal which carry what could be seen as a creaminess to long and seemingly never-ending finish. I'm loving the freshness but it's certainly staring some aging down if that's what you're after. Drink now to a decade." QWine

"92/100  Sourced from 77 year old vines, the wine gives a light yellow with a fleck of green in the glass with a nose shows lemon and a touch of oyster shell.  There is generosity on the palate before it builds with citrus acidity and a chalkiness to the lingering finish with pink grapefruit the star.  A wine to cellar with confidence over the long term. Optimal Drinking: 2018 - 2030." Winereviewer

"From 77-year-old Bainton vineyard vines at Broke, the Gartelmann 2017 Benjamin Semillon is green-tinted straw and has ginger blossom scents and a crisp lemony front palate. Green apple, mineral and nascent toast and honey show on the middle palate and the finish has steely acid. Drink with: calamari. Ageing: nine years. 4.5 Stars" Newcastle Herald, John Lewis

"This is a pleasant, undeniable young Hunter Valley semillon from the Gartelmann team. All the varietal characteristics are present in abundance. The ripe citrus / limey fruit profile, the undertones of fresh straw, the zingy acid are cloaked by palate pleasing residual sweetness. It is enjoyable now with potential of further bottle development." The Grape Hunter, Gilbert Labour

"Lovely crunchy phenolic style with delicate aromas and palate offering pears and peaches. "Great with cheese!"" Winestate Magazine

"... Attractive ripe flavours with steely touches are in line with the variety’s revered local status. Cellaring potential is assured." The Sunday Telegraph, John Fordham
